Apologies for the Whiplash

If you tried to load my venerable Blogspot blog and found yourself here, apologies for the confusion.

Over the last…. year? Maybe? It might not be that long… my Sims blogging friends have been referencing comments they left on my blog that I’d never seen. Then I started getting a handful of test comments of the flavor, “Hey, is it working this time?”

The straw on the camel’s back was chat on Gryffindork’s blog, where she mentioned that she’d tried to leave several comments that didn’t seem to have appeared. She did some testing at my request and it looks like there was a MAJOR problem with comments being dropped. I don’t know how many comments failed to make it to my blog(s), but the implications are staggering (where “staggering” must be relative to the number of comments you’d expect on a fiction blog about a video game).

I spent this week converting all three of my Sims blogs to self-hosted WordPress. This has been a surprisingly emotional transition. I started Sims blogging on Blogspot at the beginning of 2010. I like Blogger. Plus, I was really afraid of losing my absurdly long archive or even one precious comment. I was super cautious, but it turns out there are very good plugins for this.

So, if you’ve tried to comment in the past and couldn’t figure out what happened to your comment, please try again.

Thanks, folks.

  1. Testing, testing! Everything looks great, and I can see my WordPress avatar underneath this comment box already, so I have high hopes that this comment will actually show up. I really hope the new platform works out for you, and that I didn’t initiate this wild change of lifestyle for nothing. 😛

  2. I like what you’ve done with this place, so to speak. 😉 Hopefully this will work out fine now. I’ve been having trouble with Blogger for a while now, too, and I was thinking of an alternative. WordPress is something I’m familiar with from my private blog, and it’s always been good to me. Enjoy! 🙂

    • I’m glad you like it! I was really sad to leave Blogger, but losing comments!! I was so ticked off.

I spent forever on the themes. I was kind of silly.

What problems have you been having with Blogger? Your blogs are not in my blogroll because they’re breaking it for some reason. Trying to get the latest post is throwing an error, and that leads the whole page to error out. Feedly can handle it. I don’t know what the deal is. It seems to be all your blogs though, but not other Blogger blogs. What the heck?

I didn’t know about your private blog! You must be commenting with a WordPress account because your name links to that blog. What does Amhranai mean? I get the feeling you told me once, and I forgot. It looks like you have a private domain. If you’re hosting your private blog, you could probably host multiple ones the way I did.

  3. It looks like I can comment here with my WordPress account without any of my non-Sims accounts popping up! Hooray! The new blog looks great, and I’m really looking forward to Victoria taking over. 🙂

    • Fabulous! I’m so glad you could comment, and it all works!

I have about one sim-day left to play in my ISBI before it’s ready for an heir poll. Then on to Victoria! I’m pretty excited too. Redesigning the blog theme to match her style really got me in the mood.

  4. It took me a few days, but I am now caught up on the whole thing! And you’ve single-handedly inspired me to start a new legacy, after the loss of my old one. So thanks!

This is such a fun story, I love the family. Ada was my favorite family member so far. Victoria is gorgeous, and I can’t wait to see where her story goes!

    • Wow! You read the whole thing! That’s amazing! Thank you!

I’m going to start playing the Samples again in a few days, so I hope there will be something to post soon.

I’m sorry you lost your legacy. I clicked through and checked out the Seabrookes. They were awesome! I really love narrative legacies. I will definitely read the Thistles.

  5. Alrighty, this is where my attempt to catch up kicks in! 🙂 I have now bookmarked your new links on my new laptop and am ready to read all the chapters after this one. So sorry I didn’t react to your last reply on my comment from…erm…August. Whoops. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? *grins apologetically*

    So, here’s your reply, finally:
My problems with Blogger mostly occur while writing new posts. The layout gets screwed up and I end up with my pictures either being directly over the text bits, with no space, or at a ridiculously high distance from the texts. The fonts sometimes change within a chapter, and I always dread posting a new chapter because it takes me hours to do so. So I’m still thinking of transferring my blog somewhere else. If I decided to actually do so, could I get back to you to get some advice?

I have no idea why my blogs can’t be properly linked on your blogroll Oo something is going really wrong there, I suppose. Maybe that changes, too, when I transfer? Might be a good reason for getting that started.

Yeah, I’ve had that blog, which mostly hosts book reviews and song recommendations, for a couple of years now and got the private domain about 1,5 years ago. I didn’t check whether I can host another one without spending more money, but I should check that out! 🙂 Amhranai is Irish and means “singer” – felt appropriate, since I spent a lot of the last years with music, particularly singing&playing piano, and hopefully there’s more music in my immediate future. 🙂

    • Thanks for taking time from your busy teaching schedule to read!! It’s so good to see a comment from you!

Hmmm…. I have some guesses as to what might be going on with your pictures. One thing I might suggest is to switch raw HTML and add the pictures there (you should be able to use the same menu button to do it, if I remember correctly). I found that when you did it that way, you had the option to choose None for an orientation (rather than left, right, center). An orientation of None should prevent weird attempts at text wrapping, which is my guess as to what is wrong with your pictures.

I’ll try adding your blogs back to my blogroll if you think you’ll have time to update them. I can see if the problem is solved.

Amhranai is a perfect screen name for you :).

  6. I’m just commenting here to see if I can….and to offer you a belated welcome to WordPress! I’ve been using it the whole time (as I guess you know) and like it a lot, but I will say that trying to finagle picture layout can be a big pain in the tookus, especially if you want to try to do anything fancy. (This may be covered in above comments, but I was so excited by the opportunity to actually COMMENT that I haven’t read them yet.) Anyway, welcome!

    • Squee! So good to see you!

I still miss. It doesn’t have this whole community dedicated to producing a bajilion themes that all manage to not do the one thing you want.

The funny thing is that I used my Google-employed husband to report the bugs, and they actually claim they’re fixed now. But it’s too late. Watching how few Blogspot/Blogger blogs are used in our community, I think this inattention probably killed the product. Sigh.
