5.9 Escape to Reality

After Veronica’s little freezing incident, it wasn’t a big surprise that a cold winter was coming. It descended on the Sample house almost overnight, bringing beautiful snow and ice with it.

Veronica set Charles and herself up with a bedroll in the basement, which was hardly living in the style they had become accustomed.

Veronica was spending more time at a desk processing research and less time out in the field these days, but she relished her field assignments when they came.

And there were always new discoveries to be made.

Ghostly snow prints in the kitchen….hmmm….

Eventually the nagging cold combined with Charles’s wanderlust. Charles booked tickets

And the two swinging seniors escaped to France for a long vacation.

It had been a long time since they’d had so much time to spend on each other. What to do first?

Oh, right.

The hotel had trouble with random people wandering into hotel rooms, but the elder Samples didn’t particularly care if rude people got a show.

The skies were so dark in Shang Simla that you could see the stars in a way you simply couldn’t at home.

Around the town, Charles even happened to run into his old flame.

After so many years, the spark was still there with Berthe. But they had their own lives and were too wise to do anything about it.

She did invite him back to her house, however, and they enjoyed a nice afternoon of tea and catching up on each other’s lives.

And then there were adventures.

If Charles was losing his touch, he wasn’t going to admit it to anyone, even himself.

But he did take some breaks in between scorching flame traps and sleeping gas traps to enjoy the simpler things in life.

Meanwhile, Sky tried to reconcile herself to domestic life. What was it that mothers did, anyway? They probably had to be able to cook healthy, nutritious meals for their offspring.

Oh, dear.

Wow, it probably wasn’t supposed to smoke.

All, right, her child was just going to have to live on pizza.

When the doorbell rang, Sky fully expected it to be pizza delivery. Instead, to her shock, it was Leah.

“C-come in,” Sky stammered at the door. “It’s freezing out there.”

“Yeah,” Leah said. “I think I need a heavier coat!”

She stepped inside, stomping the snow off her shoes.

“I, I thought maybe I should give you some space,” Sky ventured.

Leah nodded. “Yeah, that was probably a good idea. I had a lot to think about.”

“I swear I’m not lying to you,” Sky said. “It’s really your baby. I didn’t cheat on you.”

“I’ve been doing a lot of thinking,” Leah said. “And I’ve decided to trust you. I mean, who could make this stuff up?”

“Leah!” Sky threw herself into her girlfriend’s arms. “You’re amazing!”

“I love you so much,” Leah breathed.

“And we’re having a baby!”

Not the best organized post, but what I had to work with was kind of eclectic. I couldn’t NOT post Veronica on the bannister.

  1. Veronica on the bannister was awesome! She's so enthusiastic about everything she does. It was nice that she and Charles were able to go on a vacation, but I got a little worried when he met up with Berthe. It's kind of sad that he's not the successful adventurer he once was. I don't think I'm ready for him to be old!

Leah and Sky's reunion was very sweet. I'm glad that Leah was able to work things out and trust Sky.

  2. Phew, I'm really glad Sky and Leah worked things out and can now found their little family! 🙂 For a minute I was really worried that Leah would stick with the thought of Sky cheating on her.

And it's nice to see Charles and Veronica having some time off from the winter (although their house looks BEAUTIFUL with all the snow) in France! 🙂

  3. The home is gorgeous in the snow. Charles and Veronica are still wonderful together for adventures. It's nice that Sky and Leah are going to make it through their unexpected pregnancy.

  4. Veronica is awesome. I love how young she still is … Even if Charles is getting older (sniff), his wife will keep him young. I know that Leah said that she trusts sky, but I think a little part of her won't believe it until the baby is actually here and she has the proof. I can't wait for babies 🙂

  5. Loving Charles and Veronica, taking off together, it's so cute. (And lots of granny panty and bra shots, are you trying to tell us something?) You really take such good pictures. I enjoy them soo much!

Glad Leah is back, but wondering if it was a little too easy…

And gosh, the house is just gorgeous in wintertime. So, so pretty!

  6. Aww. Apparently I never responded to the comments on this entire thread. Smack me with a wet noodle.

It was cool to see Charles and Berthe together. Their younger encounter was before the attraction system, so it was fun to see all the attraction alarms go off when they met. I still sometimes wonder what the story would have been like if he'd married her, though I'd never go back. At any rate, Charles is faithful through and through. There's no danger he'd do anything while he was alone with Berthe that he wouldn't do if Veronica was in the room with them.

As for Sky and Leah, this is the *beginning* of Generation 5. I don't think it's very spoilery to say that they haven't even met the hard part yet.

  7. What a relief! Sky and Leah will be two gorgeous mothers 🙂 Can’t wait to see how their genetics mixed up!

The house looks wonderful with all the snow. It reminds me so much of Christmas, especially at night 🙂

It’s lovely to see your elders enjoying the life the way they used to when they were younger. Veronica’s ‘hot grandma’ underwear is sooo sexy 😛 LOL
