The Plan

I have essentially completed all the work on the elf Hogwarts world, and I’ve figured out how to populate it. AND, I think I have a plan.

I’ll run through five generations of Samples. The heir to Gen 6, upon reaching young adulthoold, will be Elf-ified and moved to the elf world. Then I’ll run through five generations there. I’ll track my Pinstar points for both half-legacies to make one complete 10-generation one.

I think I’m going to do a modified Rainbowcy in Elven Hogwarts. Basically, the heir will be restricted to making babies with someone of a skintone who is not already in the gene pool. E.g. if the heir starts silver (seems likely considering Charles), then his/her spouse will have to be NOT silver-skinned, and the next spouse will have to not be the skintone of either parents, etc. I may try to actually do a Rainbowcy progression: silver, gold, copper, bronze, cobalt, veridium, but that’ll have to depend on how the population of the town balances out, since I still want them to find love of their own volition.

I may or may not actually come up with a good story excuse for this to happen. We’ll see. Regardless, it’ll be fun ;).

SimDjinn, this is YOUR FAULT

So, why have there been no posts for a while here with the Samples?

Because talking to SimDjinn about future game ideas made me go out and actually try them out.

So, my idea for what I might do someday when the Samples are done was create a fantasy-ish neighborhood populated entirely by metallic-skinned elves using the metallic skintone series I used for Charles (http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=440794) and the pointed ears CAS sliders (http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=374167).

It turns out that the base idea works great and looks fabulous. I’m having some trouble with populating the town, though. I thought I’d read in Twallan’s documentation that sims that are immigrated into a town should be created using genetics from the sims in the sim bin. I created a couple of elf families and then ran an empty town, and I’m still getting ordinary flesh-toned immigrants. I’m sure this can be done though, and if I continue to be confused, I can just ask Twallan because he’s amazing and patient.

The challenging part turns out to be creating a neighborhood with a fantasy feel to it. Creating custom neighborhoods in Create-A-World is huge, daunting task that I can’t even contemplate. (Readhead, you are awesome.) Most custom neighborhood projects go on for a few months and then get dropped. Of those comparatively few custom neighborhoods that are actually built to a playable state and posted for download, essentially none of them are fantasy themed. I found one on EA’s site that some people were using and seemed to like, but it crashed on load. In retrospect, this is probably because I don’t have the Pets expansion yet.

Then I happened upon this gem: The Hogwarts Wizarding World (http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/191471.page). It’s a lovingly-reproduced Harry Potter neighborhood using movie shots to create a fabulous Hogwarts castle and Hogsmeade town. It’s fantasy-themed. It’s complete. It’s beautiful. However, it had a few issues:

1. It’s two years old, and the designer seems to have dropped off the forum in the way of these things.

In some ways, that’s good because Pets didn’t exist back then, and his world only requires World Adventures. However, it turns out that creating fully-custom rabbitholes (City Hall, Police Station, etc.) for the base game cannot be done without a mod — the apparently-famous Jynx Rabbithole Replacements mod (http://customsims3.com/forums/thread-53.html, registration required). And in two years, this mod has been updated several times, and the forum it was originally posted to shut down. The current version is not backward-compatible. If you load the Harry Potter world with the current mod version, you get a world with no rabbitholes at all. You can add them, provided you can figure out where they were supposed to be.

I spent about a day and a half wandering around the web, looking for old versions of this mod that the world would recognize. Eventually found these slightly-modified versions on ModTheSims (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=411270) that are old enough. Of course, those old rabbitholes won’t actually WORK, but they did produce icons on the world map that I could replace with ones that would. And then after I’d tracked them down, I found a post in the original thread linking to them *headdesk*. (Though, in my defense, that link didn’t have a lot of context, and there are a ton of bad links on this thread as people tried to figure out how to get the world working.)

And because I am a nice guy, I posted the save file with the updated rabbitholes to the old thread. I wonder if anyone will use them.

2. Um, what am I going to do with a population of metallic-skinned elves in a Harry Potter world?

At first, I thought I’d smother the whole Harry Potter-ness of the place and just build it into a generic fantasy world, turning Hogwarts into a castle for a king and queen, etc. But as I played with it, I just couldn’t do it. The world is just so lovingly done. If I take the Harry Potter out, it loses so much of its spirit. So I’ve been updating it in the spirit of the original, leaning heavily on Wikipedia to supply me with people and place names.

Yeah, I read all the books and saw movies 1-6, and I swear I’ll see the final two eventually. I liked the books and some of the movies. But I wouldn’t classify myself as a passionate Harry Potter fan, and I can’t seem to muster much interest in trying to recreate them in The Sims. I want to play with elves. Metallic elves.

So, maybe this is a post-apocalyptic Hogwarts where the House Elves staged a revolt and drove out the humans? Ha. I crack myself up.

This has been a delightful side project. But I can’t say that any plans for it have materialized yet. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to take the Samples all the way to 10 generations, and I’m certainly not going to start another 10-generation challenge. I thought I might try my hands at a Wishacy, but I admit that I like to send my sims to bed at a reasonable hour so that they’re well-rested for the next day, and that not really the way Buckeygirl’s rules work. I’m somewhat considering doing a semblance of a Rainbowcy, but I don’t want to construct each generation’s mate in CAS; I want them to find love on their own. And I wouldn’t want to do more than five generations anyway.

Hmmm… maybe a Random Legacy, which is what Redhead is doing. That seems like it might be something different from what I’m doing with the Samples while not requiring me to bend my play style too badly. Hmmm.

At any rate, I’m almost done modifying the world, and I’m thrilled with it. It’s updated for Ambitions and Late Night, with theme-appropriate Medieval and Tolkien-themed lots added to support about twice the population of the original. My crowning achievement IMHO was figuring out how to rename the rabbitholes so that the Hogwarts school is called Hogwarts rather than “School House Rabbithole” or “Community School for the Gifted.” I think I’m going to add Apparition Stations (Subways).

If anyone is interested in my modified version, I’ll happily post it for download.

And meanwhile, Charles is still not married, and this is an issue.

4.0 Passing the Torch to Charles

Charles spent his last night of highschool homework with his best friend Jabari Keaton. Homework was one thing he was not going to miss.

Afterward, they celebrated with an evening spent the evening sparring in his back yard.

Then came graduation and his big step into adulthood.

OK, it was a nice look, but not HIS look.

He immediately registered as a fisherman at City Hall. It was the perfect career. He could set his own hours and spent as much time as possible enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.

“Mom, there’s so much wasted potential,” he enthused. “Grandma’s amazing garden provides all the fruits and vegetables we need. My fish provide protein. All we need is a power source, and we could get completely off the grid.”

Zahra rolled her eyes when he wasn’t looking, but she didn’t argue with him when he began installing solar cells around the yard.

Or even the windmill in the back yard.

The house hadn’t had never been greener, and Charles couldn’t be happier with it.

When he wasn’t fishing, meditating, and recycling, he helped Zahra maintain the garden. It really was too much for one person.

There was only one problem in his new life. Charles had found a way to be visible, but he couldn’t stop frightening people.

His only friend outside the family was Jabari, and he hadn’t managed so much as a date in highschool. It was kind of a lonely life, and he wanted to do better.

He was his own man now. He’d figure it out.

Oh yeah, and Lance is back around and enjoying the afterlife.

———

Finally the start of the new generation! You’ll see Charles roll through a couple of hairstyles before we settle back to Battler :).

Simantics: Pets Patch Edition

Time to bridge the generation with a Simantics interlude.

Around this time, I installed the Pets patch, and shortly afterward, I purchased Late Night and Generations and moved the entire town to a modified Sunset Valley. It took me a bit to get things moving smoothly. Most of these pics are from that adjustment.

Charles gets even more ghostly in the shower.

Fabian has a really blockheaded day.

When Lancelot died, there was no space for the Grim Reaper in the dining room. So he just stood outside, slashing his scythe through the wall. Here’s an example.

Layla has lunch WHILE she’s watering the garden. Seriously, the garden was actually being watered.

I had to reset her.

Well, then DON’T EAT IT!

I forgot to reinstall Charles’ skintone after the upgrades, and the game gave him Death’s.

And the best for last. Charles’s custom futon was really screwed up by the Pets patch.

I tried to fix it by upgrading Charles to the double bed, but that produced this:

Get a load of his feet here:

I uninstalled the futons, and Daluved1 eventually posted a fix. However, these futons naturally float in the air, and you have to adjust them downward. When they’re adjusted downward, Charles gets a routing error when he tries to go to bed. So for now, I’ve reported the problem, and I’m just letting the futon float.

Oh, and townie/cross-pollination update!

While I was packing up the town to move, I briefly switched control to the Williamses. Israel Sharpe-Bauer is still living with his foster family, and Viola moved in with him. So, a very pregnant Viola had gone off to the junk yard (!) to write, and Israel was home on a date with Pauline Wan! Poor Viola. Her husband is a dirtbag. Now she they have a son (whose name I haven’t looked up).

Malika Williams is still alive, and now I know why. Her age was apparently reset at some point to the beginning of elderhood. I think I may just trigger her age transition, because she’s like 120 now and creeping me out.

Arvid Voss’s relationship with River McIrish was somehow erased in the move, and now he’s with Darlene Bunch. I turned YA-to-elder relationships back on, but he isn’t biting. Plus I don’t think he’s a YA anymore anyway :).

Trixi married Jess Ursine without any unexpected baby surprises. They seem pretty happy. Jess seems to be just the right amount of bad boy. He’s a coward associated with an organized crime gang, but he really just writes books. Due to my pregnant men glitch, Xander ended up with their baby. I think he’s still living with his parents, so they’ll have to deal with it.

And getting on the subject of creepy townies, Jamie Jolina married Iqbal Alvi. They had a son. Then Iqbal died, and Jamie got it on with her stepson Miraj. Then THEY got married. And had a son. I believe it is now impossible to chart the Jolina-Alvi family tree without using the third dimension.

Vita Alto is the Leader of the Free World. Her husband Nick Alto is the Emperor of Evil. Sunset Valley has some political troubles, clearly.

Generation 2 Legacy Accounting

So, Generation 2 has finally come to a close, and here is their Pinstar point accounting.

I’m including Cycl0n3 here. Though he is technically part of Generation 3, he lived out his short ghost existence and passed on before Lance or Layla.

Now, technically Pinstar is adamant that playable ghosts and their children don’t count. However, his reasoning is that you can’t bring back a member of the bloodline after death to get more time to max him out. Cycl0n3 wasn’t someone who accidentally died and was resurrected. He entered the household as a ghost, and he married into the bloodline as a ghost. Therefore, I’m declaring Pinstar’s rule inapplicable.

Generation 2: 1 point

Lifetime Wish: 3 (4) points
– Lancelot: Renaissance Sim, skills Painting, Athletics, and Martial Arts
– Layla: Perfect Garden
– Cycl0n3: Chess Legend

Layla also became a Celebrated 5-Star Chef. This was NOT her Lifetime Wish. However, I’m unlikely to pursue a culinary sim again, and she did all the work for it without any overlap. I am contemplating awarding points for multiple, non-overlapping LTW criteria that are met by the same sim. For example, Lance wouldn’t get credit for Physical Perfection — Maxing Athletic and Martial Arts skills — because those skills were already applied to his existing LTW. But Layla could get credit for maxing out her career AND growing a perfect garden. Keeping in mind that you can’t duplicate Lifetime Wishes, so a future sim couldn’t take that wish.

Portraits: 3 points
Lancelot painted portraits of himself, Layla, and Cycl0n3.

Legacy House/Net worth: 1 point.
The house has added over $100k in net worth since Generation 1

Aspiration Rewards: 4
Lancelot died at 260,000 (2 points)
Layla died at 190,000 (sob, 1 point)
Cyclone died at 100,214 (1 point).

Cycl0n3 just barely made it, and he probably wouldn’t have made it if not for the extra days he got from his aging being frozen. So I suppose that’s a bit of compensation for losing Layla’s point.

Total for Generation 2: 12 (13)

3.45 Togetherness

Losing Lancelot came down on the Samples like an anvil.

Everyone was struggling and trying not to drag everyone else down.

They all soldiered through the days. But it was Layla who found herself in that empty bed every night.

She tried to put on a brave face, but she wasn’t really fooling anyone.

Everyone wanted to cheer her up. Charles tried his usual fare.

But she barely noticed.

Ada and Fabian dragged her to the art museum to get her out of the house.

Ada was in her element. “It’s so golden,” she whispered, “and the tiny golden men are singing to me.”

Fabian ran into none other than Mayor Tamara Donner. He was so bowled over that he followed her into the bathroom to interview her.

And Layla tried. She really did.

“What’s this thing again? Dadaist? Dada is a movement?”

When she got home, she declared that all she really wanted was a nice bubble bath. Before anyone else could react, Charles had teleported to the to the grocery store to pick up some bath soap.

And got himself picked up for being out after curfew.

When he got home, Zahra really let him have it.

Zahra was terrifying and unforgiving when she was angry.

But Charles was only trying to help. He carried around his resentment until it exploded.

“Do you have any idea the kind of energy your research equipment is wasting? Do you even care?? We all have to live on this planet too!”

Layla listened to the arguing going on downstairs and wracked her brain.

The grief and tension were ripping the family apart at the seams. Lance of all people would have been crushed. She had to think of something to draw them back together.

“The twins’ birthday is coming up,” she told the household. “It’s been so long since we were all together as a family. I think we should throw them a party.”

Everyone jumped to make it so.

The next evening, the Sample house was busting at the seams.

“I don’t know if Agnes said anything,” Shanni confided in Toya as they arrived. “I’m pregnant! Zahra referred us to a doctor who does work for the Science Center.”

“That’s fabulous!” Toya crowed. “Now that money isn’t so tight, Adjo and I are thinking about trying for another one. Let me tell you about babies….”

Adjo slipped away while the women gossiped to pay his respects.

There was hustle and bustle of catching up on everyone’s lives. Adjo and Toya had weathered the lean times, and Adjo was now in business for himself again as a local band manager. “These kids have talent like you wouldn’t believe,” he said. “All they need is one break, and we’re talking national attention, big name label, their voice on every radio station. This is for real.”

While the blood Samples were laughing and comparing notes, Agnes drifted up the stairs alone. Fabian watched her go. He followed and found her sitting on the upstairs couch, staring into space.

“This seat taken?” he asked, not waiting for an answer.

“You!” Agnes said. “What are you doing here? If your wife finds us alone, she’ll cut your balls off.”

“Yeah,” he said amiably. “So she tells me. So what are you doing here all alone?”

“It’s just a little intense down there. I needed a breather.”

“Tell me about it. How’s married life?”

Agnes sighed. “Complicated. It was so much easier with Erik. Or maybe I never got a chance to find out how hard it would be before he died. Don’t get me wrong. I love Shanni. But she’s… intense. And Shanni pregnant is almost more than I can handle. A woman with such a delicate mood should never have a condition that gives her extra mood swings.”

“I know what you mean,” Fabian said. “Monogamy is a lot of work, isn’t it? You might have noticed that Zahra’s the irresistible force AND the unmovable object. I wouldn’t change a thing, but sometimes I wonder how my life could have been different.”

“Yeah,” Agnes said. “I hear you.”

“So we’ve come to this,” Fabian said softly.

Agnes flinched. “Come to what?”

“Old friends. Sometimes old lovers make the best kind.”

She laughed. “Especially old lovers you’d never take back.”

“I deserved that. I think the cake is ready down there. Let’s get going before someone comes looking for us, and I lose my balls.”

And there were laughing, cheering, wishes pondered, and candles blown out.

Under the gaze of old loved ones.

Then cake.

And dancing.

“The thing about the orbital mind control lasers is that most people can’t see or hear them,” Ada told Shanni. “Except me. When the lasers are on, I can feel the heat on the back of my head.”

“I know just what you mean,” Shanni answered eagerly. “Like the invisible words the government inserts into news articles to control the way you think about them.”

“I had no idea you’d understand!”

It was early morning before they could bring themselves to say goodbye. The cloud had lifted from the house. There was cleaning to be done in the morning, but now was the time to unwind.

Layla headed to her empty bedroom with a feeling of peace and contentment. The feeling grew inside her until she realized it was something else entirely.

Layla’s time had come too, and she was ready to embrace it.

It was hard to say goodbye.

But this time, the ones left behind were ready to take comfort in each other.

Who is remembered, lives.

———

And then there were four. Layla left the household also at age 104 with Lifetime Happiness of (sob) 190,000. If I’d really processed how long she was going to live, I could have nudged her to 200,000. I tried at the end, but it wasn’t soon enough. Plus, she went the last day and a half without generating any wishes. Her last big wish was to throw that birthday party. Still, I don’t think there was enough time to get to the goal even if she’d been more helpful.

This is the last post for Generation 3. It seems kind of fitting that it should end with the farewell of Generation 2.

Generation 3 has been by far the most engaging generation so far. Everyone became a well-rounded personality. Everyone had a story arc. It felt more like a story than either 1 or 2. And you can certainly tell by how many posts I managed to generate for them. 45. Damn.

Oh, yeah, and it turns out that both Insane and Neurotic sims have the “Talk about Conspiracies” conversation option, and it gives them a relationship boost instead of a hit. Shanni and Ada really do understand each other in a special way :).

On to Charles!

3.44 Pinnacle

Layla had been the Executive Chef of the Little Corsican Bistro for ages. As she grew older, the work became more and more familiar, and it took very little effort to keep the restaurant at the quality it had become known for. Layla began to wonder why she was even bothering to show up for work. She wasn’t getting any younger. She should have retired a long time ago. What kept her coming back?

She did something she’d never done before. She called her boss, the owner of the restaurant, out to meet her outside of work hours.

“I don’t think the bistro needs me anymore,” Layla confessed. “I was thinking of retiring.”

“Of course you can if you want to,” the director admitted, “but I see just the opposite. You have real culinary genius, and if you let yourself apply it, you could take us places we’ve never been before.”

Layla thought about those words overnight, and in the morning she’d made her decision. She sat down and designed a menu that wove the cuisine of her childhood with the bistro’s usual fare. Italian-Egyptian fusion.

Sunset Valley was bowled over. Little Corsican Bistro made national, then international reviews.

Layla was a celebrated 5-star chef.

Her boss had been right. She had more potential than she’d ever expressed. And now that it was expressed, she felt at peace. She’d really done all there was to do in the culinary arts.

She made the call and retired from the bistro.

Lancelot was delighted. He’d never had a proper job, and he’d never really understood her desire to have a career. Now that she’d set it aside, he was eager to enjoy all the extra time together.

They celebrated in proper fashion.

Fabian helped her celebrate by fixing a breakfast she had no need to help with.

Layla felt so free she could sing. There were all sorts of new skills and hobbies to explore in her retirement.

To start with, she took a writing class and sat down to write her memoirs.

All was right in the Sample household. Zahra and Fabian were reconnecting.

Charles finally made the honor roll! Being visible didn’t hurt a bit.

“Hey Granddad,” Ada called to Lancelot after school one day. “I’ve been writing some adventure fiction. Could you take a look?”

“Absolutely, my girl!” Lance crowed, his chest puffed out that his expertise was called for.

And that’s when the tingling sensation washed over him.

It was a warm, fluffy feeling, almost like flying.

Lancelot Sample’s time had finally come.

Surrounded by his family, he said his goodbyes.

“Don’t cry,” he tried to tell them. “It’s actually kind of fun!”

But he was already past speaking. They’d have to figure it out on their own.

Without regret, and proud of all he left behind, Lancelot passed into the Netherworld.

———-

(Woo! Lancelot died at the age of 104 with ~260 happiness points. Even though Susie was the founder, I spent most of her lifetime figuring out how to play the game. Lance has been with me for a long time, and it’s hard to imagine playing the legacy without him. I looked up how long a Vegetarian can live, and it’s up to 15 days longer than normal sims, so I was starting to warm up to the idea of him getting to hold his great-grandchild. In the end, he didn’t make it nearly that far, and not even as crazy long as some Vegetarians. I read in someone else’s legacy of a Veggie who lived to be 111!

I’m gonna miss you, Lance.)

3.43 You Know It’s Time to Leave When…

Zahra wandered out of the bedroom, down the hall, and into the kitchen. She was ravenous, and it had been a long night.

Fabian relaxed on the sofa with a book on logic. “Morning dear,” she said absently to him as she passed.

“Morning, love,” Fabian said, looking up. “You don’t happen to think that something is different do you?”

“Different?” Zahra asked, flushing. “What do you think is different?”

“It’s just that we seem to have misplaced the entire kitchen.”

Zahra looked around. “Oh, it’s not that bad! It’s just a few counters… and a stove… and the coffee maker… The refrigerator’s fine!”

“Have you been playing with the space-time continuum again?”

“No! Well, maybe just a little.”

Fabian sighed, setting down his book. “I understand your dedication to science and everything. It’s great. But would you please keep the experiments a the lab?”

“It wasn’t just an experiment,” Zahra began defensively. “I needed– AIGH! Charles! Would you stop that!”

“Ha, Mom! It gets you every time.”

Fabian glanced at the science book he’d left on the sofa. “I’ve been reading up on this stuff. All the mad science is making this place unstable. I think it’s time we moved. There’s nothing about space-time damage on the disclosure form, so we shouldn’t have not declare anything dangerous when we put it on the market. If we wait until the place HAS collapsed, our homeowner’s insurance won’t cover a thing.”

Zahra deflated. “All right. Let’s go house-hunting.”

Fabian grinned. “I have a better idea. Why don’t you collect up your experimental equipment and take it back to the lab. The kids and I will go house-hunting.”

So Fabian, Ada, and Charles picked a place to live.

And soon they were all packed and on their way.

The new place was an old estate in the architecture of the English countryside. It was directly on the beach and surprisingly close to downtown. Fabian had done a pretty good job.

They arrived on the evening of Ada’s birthday, with just enough time to celebrate properly.

And after a makeover:

Ada was…. changed after that birthday. The artistic vision that had always dominated her personality now seemed to take on a life of it own. Sometimes she started talking to the furniture, or walking around outside in her underwear.

“Don’t worry,” Fabian told Zahra uneasily. “It’s a phase. She’ll grow out of it.”

(Ha! Ada rolled Insane for her teen trait! I was totally not expecting that!

And the upcoming Gen 4 has a new house! It’s English Country Estate at ModTheSims. It has a few issues. The 2×1 gothic arches used don’t seem to exist anymore, one of the upstairs beds was unroutable, and so was one half of the dining table. I tweaked the walls a bit to fix those things, and I replaced the arches with some not-as-pretty columns.

Of course, I ended up moving before I’d intended to AGAIN. This is another elaborate Simfail associated with Shanni’s wedding. Why is it that nobody can get out of this household without there being major game issues???

This time, right after Shanni and Agnes got engaged, I started having major game slowdowns. It literally took Shanni all night to get to her bureau and then to the mirror to fix her wedding dress and hair. I actually tried to do the wedding in this state, which is where the pic of bodiless Parker came from, but it was slow and messed up, and nobody came except the immediate household and Parker for some reason. And then I clicked Agnes and there was NO “GET MARRIED” OPTION.

So I downloaded a utility I read about on ModTheSims that would locate corrupted CC, and the utility flagged the entire custom kitchen from the house they were living in. I don’t know how this could have been the problem, since I’ve been playing in that house for like six months of real time, but it’s possible that there was some cumulative problem. I deleted the kitchen, and things improved immediately.

So I figured it was more fun to roll that into the story :).

I wanted to get the household out of the corrupted house as fast as possible, so I actually moved them out before the wedding and staged them in Condor Museum Lofts for the duration of Shanni’s wedding. Then I moved them to the new digs. So, for your Simantic viewing pleasure….

Here is the whole family standing around in the basement of the loft building.

Shanni was so excited that walls could not stand in her way.

And I close with a cute pic of Shanni calling to schedule her own wedding party.

Ha!)

Simfail: I’ve heard of the headless horseman, but…

First, some funnies before I get to the real rant:

Hearkening back to the last family vacation, this has to be the best travel-return pileup I’ve ever seen.

If you’re not tracking, that’s Lance (elder), Charles (teen), and Ada (child) on their return from Egypt.

Toya and Adjo showed up at the theater plaza the evening Ada sold muffins.

But something was wrong….

Charmaine seemed to be having a bit of a bad hair day.

And the worst of it is that I did haul the toddler into CAS to fix it, but I still don’t know what that bad toddler conversion hair is so I can delete it.

Shanni had a bit of trouble getting ready for her wedding.

Not a lot to say here, except that it’s actually a pretty artistic camera collision detection fail.

Mortimer lost track of what he was upset about.

Or maybe he just wished Shanni were dead.

Actually, poor Mortimer was a wreck for the whole wedding. He STILL wasn’t over Shanni dumping him, and Cornelia Goth died between the time Shanni dumped him and the wedding. So I had to keep an eye out to make sure his constant grief freakouts didn’t photobomb the whole event. Agnes was also grieving for Cornelia, but she handled it better.

Hank romances Bella Bachelor out at good old Lover’s Leap.

He’s since dumped her and is going with Holly Alto, and I think I just got a notification that they broke up too. I finally gave up and pollinated Pauline with his love child so that their genes will make it to the next generation. It seems pretty clear that the only way either Hank or Pauline will going to breed is by accident.

OK, and now for the rant. Look closely, now.

If you think there’s a floating head watching Mortimer put the moves on Madison Langerak, you’d be right. That would be Conrad Branch. Here’s another view:

Here Layla is talking to Parker Langerak at a previous iteration of the Agnes/Shanni wedding that I lost due to game crash.

Creeped out yet?

It turned out that five guys in total spontaneously lost their bodies. Also included were Richard Branch-Langerak and Christopher Steel. I don’t remember who the fifth guy was. I tried to make Twallan’s DebugEnabler reset their outfits, and it reset them but didn’t fix the problem. I tried to haul them into CAS and fix them, but CAS didn’t think that ANY clothing was appropriate for them.

Then I began a longish back-and-forth with Twallan on his forums. He insisted that these guys were pregnant and I had no pregnancy morphs installed. The problem was that A) I didn’t have any male pregnancy turned on at all, and B) I looked up their statuses in MasterController, and none of them were listed as pregnant.

This went on for something like two sim-weeks. In one particularly memorable moment that I failed to photograph for some reason, a bodiless Richard carried his toddler into a scene where Charles was striking out in an attempt to romance a chick on the steps of City Hall. (That scene will come up later without the creepy Richard.)

I should’ve just gone ahead and installed male pregnancy morphs to see if their bodies would appear. It was still clearly some kind of glitch, but it would’ve given me more information on WHAT kind.

Then I tried to package up my town to move it to the Late Night modified Sunset Valley, and when I tried to package up my townies using Twallan’s Porter mod, the game would hang. Through a lot of trial-and-error, I determined that the exports failed only if one of these bodiless guys was included in the file.

At that point, I just gave up and abandoned them in my old save file. It’s kind of sad because Kaylynn Branch-Langerak and Emma Hatch-Steel both ended up as abrupt widows with several kids each. Also, Fabian lost all of his living family but Tyrone. (Aside: I thought they were his brothers, but it turns out that both Austin and Ida Branch were dark-skinned after all, and I have a vague memory of Fabian being orphaned as a teen and moving in with relatives. Man, if I’d remembered that earlier, I’d’ve used it in the story. At any rate, I think the Branch boys are actually Fabian’s cousins. Whatever the case, all of them have dropped off his family tree, he no longer knows he’s related to them, and they don’t keep in touch. There’s only so much nudging I can do in the name of game continuity in an eight-sim household. Maybe Fabian didn’t like living with them and would rather not talk about it.)

At any rate, good riddance to bad game glitches.

All may not be right still. I finally installed male pregnancy morphs and turned on male pregnancy for male-male relationships ONLY. Since then, as far as I can tell, EVERY pregnancy in the game has been carried by a man.

Remember Trixi and Xander Clavell’s birth control failure? Trixi went off and married Jess Ursine, and XANDER had the kid. Arlo Bunch just gave birth to his and Velvet Sharpe’s love child. And in current gameplay, Charles just ran into Adjo about to pop with his and Toya’s third kid.

ARGH.

So I have more questions in to Twallan, and I think I may turn male pregnancy back off again and cross my fingers.

3.42 White Wedding

Shanni and Agnes were married at 11am on a Friday, an odd compromise between Adjo and Layla’s work schedules. It wasn’t too difficult to find a venue for that time, at least.

Shanni had always dreamed of her all-eyes-on-you moment, resplendent in a white wedding gown. But now that she was marrying another woman, she had no idea what would be appropriate, and she tried not to care.

When Agnes persuaded her to share her fantasies, she squeezed her hand with a gentle smile. “If a white wedding is what you want, then that’s what you’ll have. But you’re right. It will look silly if we both do the train and veil thing. It’s a bit silly for me to be even pretending to wear white at my second wedding.”

Instead, she wore the formalwear that Shanni had designed for them the day they met.

Shanni was shocked when she saw the wedding invitations.

“Mortimer? We’re inviting Mortimer?”

Agnes laughed. “You didn’t know that Cornelia Goth was my sister?”

Shanni blinked. “Your sister? She was nearly old enough to be your mother!”

Agnes shrugged. “I was a surprise baby. Nobody would have guessed I’d inherit the family money.”

“Then that means….”

“Your ex-boyfriend is about to be your nephew? Yes, indeed.”

What could you say to that?

“You’re stunning,” Adjo told her. “I always knew you’d be a beautiful bride.”

“I couldn’t have done it without you,” Shanni said.

“Nonsense. Maybe I helped you get there a little faster.”

Lancelot at last had a chance to be the father of the bride.

“Are you ready to do this?” he whispered to his youngest daughter, his eyes twinkling. “I can still sneak you out the back.”

Shanni cast a nervous glance at Agnes waiting for her. “No way back now. I better know what I’m doing.”

“Then let’s get this show on the road.” He took her hand and wrapped it around his arm. “Don’t worry if you feel a little woozy. I’ve been there myself. You can lean on me.”

Shanni felt her knees go weak as she took her first step and leaned into Lance’s shoulder. “Thanks, Daddy.”

Agnes and Shanni recited their simple vows.

And just like that, Shanni Sample became Shanni Crumplebottom.

On to the reception!

Much fun was had by all. The Samples were spreading out even more now. Everyone jumped at the chance to connect.

“I can’t tell you how great is to get a babysitter and hang out with adults for a while!” Toya confided in Ada.

“I’m about to be in high school,’ Ada reminded her. “I offer very reasonable babysitting rates.”

Charles, unfortunately, learned that asking Genvieve Goth to dance was a non-starter.

Mortimer caught Shanni alone for a moment to say, “I know I maybe wasn’t the most sensitive guy, but do you think we can put it all behind us?”

Shanni offered him a tight-lipped smile. “Well, we’re going to be seeing a lot more of each other,” she replied. “I think we can let bygones be bygones, nephew.”

That was just never going to get old.

“Let me know if you and Agnes are thinking about kids,” Zahra confided. “I can probably help. I don’t work in Mad Science for nothing.”

Shanni blushed. “We haven’t really talked about it, but… I’ll let you know.”

Only Fabian kept himself to the edges of the celebration.

“You don’t seem to be embracing the joy of the moment,” Layla pointed out as she took a break from dancing.

Fabian signed. “This is Agnes and Shanni’s time,” he said. “Agnes made it clear she never wanted to see me again. I’m only here because Zahra made me come. I don’t want to do anything that would make Agnes unhappy.”

Layla look up at Agnes’ face on the other side of the fountain. “I think you’d have to work pretty hard to make Agnes unhappy. If you’re looking to make amends, this might be a good time.”

Fabian thought for a few minutes. “All right then,” he said, took a deep breath and headed in the direction of the brides.

“I want you to know I couldn’t be happier for you and Shanni,” he told Agnes.

Agnes offered him a wry smile. “It seems like Shanni and I both have some unexpected family. Being enemies now would be a real pain in the butt.”

Fabian felt a grin spreading over his face. “Yeah,” he said. “You’re right about that.”

And that was that.

When the dust was settling and everyone was heading home, Layla looked wistfully at Lance. “Our last child is grown up and out of the house,” she said sadly. “We won’t ever have another.”

“That’s right,” Lance said. “We won’t ever have another child.” He gave her a wicked look. “But we sure can practice.”

(Better late that never! I don’t know what readers are left! CourtneyHelen might just be out for an extended holiday break. Lost Dreamer Girl’s blog disappeared right after I caught up on it. LDG? Are you still there??

Lance actually did start rolling a crazy number of naughty wishes about Layla right at the end of the wedding. Unfortunately, Layla had to go straight to work, so they had to be put on hold.

Mortimer came up to congratulate Shanni after she was married and actually out of the household, so that exchange was between two NPCs. It was pretty cute, all things considered.

And then there were six. It breaks my heart to say goodbye to Shanni, who was definitely my favorite out of Generation 3, but it was nice to get the household size back down again.)
